Pricing for greeting card usage rights

I've had an inquiry from someone who is asking to use one of my images for a greeting card. She wants to do a first run of 1,000. She claims to have her own company and does not work for one of the big greeting card companies. Can anyone give me some direction on what is usual for compensation/usage rights? Is it a one-time usage fee? Usage fee for each run? Based on the number in the run?... [More]

What would you do with $4,000?

No, I didn't win the lottery... (gotta play to win!) I have just been thinking about spending some of the freelance job money that I managed to squirrel away over the years.

So here are some options I am considering:

1) Go crazy and buy a Canon 1DmkIII --> I think they have almost got the bugs worked out... besides, it has to be an improvement over my 3.5 year old 20D, right?... [More]

Any Contacts in Philly or DC?

I am looking to relocate to Philadelphia or the DC area in the next month or so. I would like to find a full time position doing something photo related and was hoping you might have some suggestions or contacts in either place. I graduated in '05 and have been doing some freelance photo and design work, while working in a restaurant to pay the bills. Time to move on from that!

URGENT* PLEASE HELP

I own my own start-up photography business and have been shooting photography in many genres (sports, portraiture, fine art, etc.) and have recently taken on the field of musicians, more specifically band photography. I live in an area with many local bands and it just happened that the first band I'm working with is one who is extremely talented and aiming high. I'm wondering if anyone has... [More]

Portrait Photogs: how do you show clients their pictures?

I'm trying to figure out the best site to deal with online orders from clients without having to take on too many steps. The site i have now is okay if things aren't complicated, but i want to offer:
"buy $xxx and get x% off"
"the first sheet is $x, any additional identical sheets are $x"
"cards are $x but they're bought in quantities of x".

I'd prefer not to... [More]

PLUS Coalition Information

I am a member of the PLUS Coalition and wanted to pass some information along in case anyone else is interested. PLUS = Picture Licensing Universal System and is intended to create a standard language for licensing rights-managed visual art. There is a good article here:

Smugmug Pro

Anyone on here have a Pro account (or any account) with Smugmug?

I had ruled them out in the past for Pro sales for several reasons and went with Printroom, but am thinking of signing up with them now due to some recent changes that have implemented with the Pro account.

So in case anyone else was in the same boat and hasn't heard, Smugmug Pro accounts now offer:

leads in San Fran?

Hi all, I've just graduated from SI and am about to head into Tony's child portraiture course and DI. I intend to move to the San Francisco area soon after.

Does anyone have any leads on jobs for a full-time assistant?

I'd ideally work for some advertising/editorial studio and pick up some of my own portraiture work on the side.

Any suggestions? Ideas for where to... [More]
