Another great shot. I like the lightening/darkening. Says a lot. Makes me question is this the end of the life of such a beautiful animal, why is it in the middle of the road, is it falling behind, is it being left behind? Actually I feel quite somber with this image. I really like it. Sorry if that was not the mood you were going for but it makes me want to go and hug the sitting elephant.....
Chippy, thanks, I was going for a sad effect. The reality is much different. The scene gave the appearance that he was being left for dead, and so I captured it and tried to enhance it later with B&W and dodging/burning effect. The truth is, there were elephants all over the place, and he was rolling around in the dirt perfectly happy. Well, so far as I can determine "happy". But the whole point of the image was to try and create something different out of it, so I'm glad it got across. The title was intended to further place those thoughts with the viewer.
This is a particularly striking shot. It really caught my eye.
Fortunately, I have read a lot about elephants and they are actually extremely attached to each other. They will even return to the site of elephant bones years after a family member has passed away.
Maybe an anthromorphic statement on our current human culture?
