Still Cold But Worth It

Gate House Master

Gate House Color

Gate House Mono

It was about 12 degrees when I went out this time. And it was approaching sunset. I had tried to visualize when the light would be best and I am not sure this is what I had in mind. Winter sun was low and the canal is tree-lined so about an hour prior to sunset the shadows start getting really long and deep. Looking at this scene I would have never guessed that it is all within 5-6 stops. No kidding. I exposed for highlights and to my surprise I did not loose the shadows. That meant I was able to edit this and pull detail back out of the shadows without getting too much noise etc. I continue to mess with monochrome conversions because I think they are a great learning tool (and hey - it's free!). I will post the original, color, and mono.

After meeting with the folks who are looking to use this work it was decided that this will be a Spring/Fall scene as it does not really portray an inviting message. I may work to get a winter lifestyle shot here, but the classic winter landscape continues to allude. Still a great learning experience.

All editing done in Aperture until I get something I want to put through PS.
