URGENT* PLEASE HELP
I own my own start-up photography business and have been shooting photography in many genres (sports, portraiture, fine art, etc.) and have recently taken on the field of musicians, more specifically band photography. I live in an area with many local bands and it just happened that the first band I'm working with is one who is extremely talented and aiming high. I'm wondering if anyone has been doing any work in this field and can give me some business pointers on selling them full rights to photos and in general how to charge... really, anything will help! Even if you could get me in touch with anyone you know who has experience, it would be great! Thanks!
Lindsey
Good luck. Typically bands starting out don't have lots of cash for pictures. If they have a publicist or manager, they probably understand rights and selling full rights costs more. You can all me at the studio if you need help talking things through...We use blinkbid for our estimating and invoicing. It helps with the language. Musicians/Labels even for the big ones do typically buy all rights as they want control over where the images appear.
Best,
HAT
Thanks Hat! The band I'm working with is looking to do the shoot by the 24th and wanted some kind of estimate within the next couple of days. Are you available to be in touch with over the weekend at all? If so how do I get in touch with you? I downloaded the trial software and I'm kind of at a loss as to how I'm going to use it (all my previous jobs have all been smaller portrait types not requireing all these usage rights, etc.)
Another contact for you would be Zack Smith. He is a RMSP 2000 grad. Check his site for contact details. www.zacksmith.com
Also some of his work on the following site. www.tipitinas.com/content/artist.asp?id=smithzack
David Marx may have a direct phone number...
Lindsey,
Let us know how it works out. You are not the first to need help with the business end. Please let us know how it works out and any lessons learned you can share would be fantastic. My hope is that as our membership matures and we get more people making the business of photography work we can keep them involved with mentoring other members. Thanks to those who took the time to help out MissMarie!
Regards,
Coby
Yes, thank you all for your help! This support system has been one of the best things about going to RMSP. People questioned me leaving "traditional" schooling to pursue photography as a career, but how many people leave a university with the kind of support system shown here? I will definitly update with any lessons learned from this experience!
Sincerely,
Lindsey
